Betty Weiss

BETTY WEISS' COMPOSITIONS are an act of reduction – simplifying her imagery to fundamental forms and essential elements. Her work is inspired in part by the architec-tural shapes and colors of Mexico, where she spent a number of years in her young adulthood. In her current series of work Weiss takes as he subject matter the Silver Dollar plant seedpod. She sees it as a symbol pf nature's rhythms as embodied in the seed's role as the potential for life. Weiss layers these jaunty, repeating ovals over a
grid of overlapping colors, imposing a rhythmic order on the image. It is framed and divided, suggesting the mathematical organization of nature and its relentless ability to replicate. Weiss' works are included in many prominent collections including those of the University Gallery of the State University of New York at Albany, New York; the
Met Life Corporation, New York, New York; and the Islip Art Museum, Islip New York.
