Press Release

We are pleased to present painting, sculpture and photography by gallery artists who explore both traditional themes and contemporary issues. The work spans a wide range of media—from handmade mulberry paper to laser-cut steel—yet all of the artists use visual language rooted deep in their cultural identities.

On view are dynamic, abstract assemblages from Korean artist Chun Kwang Young combining elements of sculpture and painting, and sublime, contemplative Waterfall and Cliff paintings by renowned Japanese painter Hiroshi Senju.

Beijing-based artist Zheng Lu's steel sculpture evoking splashes of water suspended in mid-air is composed of thousands of laser-cut Chinese characters. For his colorful large-scale canvases, Mexican-born painter Ricardo Mazal crafts his own tools and employs techniques that makes oil paint look like fabric.

The show also features light-reflecting metal tondos by Japanese-American artist Miya Ando; vibrant, tactile Tantric-inspired works on paper by celebrated Indian artist, poet and guru Sohan Qadri; and abstract paintings inspired by the rich traditions of Persian calligraphy from Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi.

Images from leading photographers Sebastião Salgado, Karen Knorr and Lalla Essaydi are also on view alongside photographs from Edward Burtynsky’s latest series, Natural Order.
