新加坡聖德拉姆泰戈爾畫廊隆重呈獻大型藝術展「窈窕淑女」:歌頌婦女於國際藝術發展上的成就。展覽由Jason Andrew策展,匯集了多位生於上一世紀的出色及新興的女藝術家作品,包括著名大師Shirley Goldfarb、Louise Nevelson、Alice Neel及Helen Frankenthaler引人注目的藝術品,同時展出蜚聲國際的Ghada Amer、張慧(Zhang Hui)、Shirin Neshat及尹秀珍(Yin Xiuzhen)等當代藝術創作,以這次國際性平台挑戰及重塑大眾對「淑女」一詞的定義。

過去一百年,婦女已經走在國際社會與政治改革的最前線,不論是西方為婦女爭取選舉權或是阿拉伯之春的積極分子,婦女們一直扮演著舉足輕重的角色,不斷為世界帶來革命性的變化。她們的藝術創作及行動主義超越意識形態的界限,重新塑造全新的社會,為我們所處的世界建立出全新的定義。當中,她們的藝術更成功使不同社會界別的婦女變得更自主,同時激發起不平等、貧窮,及社會排斥等辯論。

從歷史上看,「淑女」是對社會階級或地位較高的婦女的禮貌稱呼。這次展覽為這定義給予大膽的新面貌,作品挑戰傳統思想及其他一貫的「淑女」概念,概念大無畏及冒險精神,拒絕循規蹈矩。

此展覽中「淑女」一詞含挑釁性質。二十世紀初以來,世界各地,尤其是美國,婦女均群起反對一貫「女畫家」的形象。著名美國歷史學家Linda Nochlin指出:「這形象是來自19世紀的禮儀書籍,並透過當時文學不斷鞏固。」(1)時至今日,雖然婦女於藝術方面有顯著的進步,可是社會對她們的期望與規範持續不變。開創性畫家Lee Krasner甚至需要一再強調:「我是一位藝術家,而不只是一位女藝術家。」

婦女於世界各地的藝術圈,跟其他領域一樣,要以無比毅力與決心才能成功,從她們的作品及生活就能反映出來。每位藝術家必須克服不同限制。某些限制是公開表明的,其他大多是隨著過往傳統的期望一直延伸,已經不容置疑。對許多女性來說,要得到大眾認同有如一場艱苦的戰鬥,一場直至現時仍未能結束的戰事。雖然世界各地的藝術機構及畫廊一直增加展出女藝術家的創作,這數字遠不及男藝術家的作品展。

「窈窕淑女」正正要歌頌及肯定國際間不同女藝術家的成就,她們勇於打破常規,重新編寫歷史,並將「淑女」一詞現代化。展覽包括古代,現代及新興的美國藝術家創作,以及來自中國、埃及、冰島、新加坡、南非及英國的國際知名藝術家作品,給予大眾一個全面性的女藝術家作品展。策展過程揀選了不同藝術家的跨學科、多媒體,及跨時代的開創性創作,藉以強調世界是充滿了偉大的藝術家— 當中許多都是淑女。

「窈窕淑女」展覽由Sundaram Tagore Gallery與紐約的非牟利性藝術組織Norte Maar合作籌辦。此展覽曾於2012年紐約的1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery展出,並由仲量聯行(Jones Lang LaSalle)及該畫廊聯合籌辦。

策展人簡介

「窈窕淑女」並不打算作全面性的客觀研究,而是非常個人化的選擇,如萬花筒般將我所尊重、敬佩,及欣賞的風格、圖像及人物與大眾分享。令我覺得最吸引的,是藝術創作的實體。不論是Louise Nevelson令人難忘的大型雕塑、Alice Neel富表現主義的畫布,或是Viola Frey的陶瓷擺設,這些偉大的婦女充分顯示出創作時那富觸覺的過程及嚴謹細心的處理,為後來的藝術家奠定基礎。— Jason Andrew

Jason Andrew是美國獨立策展人及監製,活躍於紐約布魯克林區。他是表現主義畫家Jack Tworkov的遺產管理人,專門研究美國戰後藝術,曾出版無數相關著作,現正編輯Jack Tworkov作品的分類目錄。以捍衛不同風格或流派的利益作宗旨,其跨學科的創作項目填補藝術歷史上的空白,反映出過去、現在與未來的創意想像。近期計劃及美術展包括美國的Jack Tworkov:對抗極端,習畫五十年(瑞銀集團藝術畫廊,普羅文斯鎮美術協會及博物館,2009年);Jack Tworkov:意外的選擇, 1952年黑山學院的藝術家(黑山學院博物館及藝術中心,2011年);「窈窕淑女」(1285 Avenue of the Americas Gallery,2012年);Giacometti及當代繪畫精選(Norte Maar,2013年);蘇格拉底的舞蹈(蘇格拉底雕塑公園, 2013年)。Andrew是紐約布魯克林區布希維克藝壇的顯赫人物,他是非牟利性藝術組織Norte Maar的合夥及負責人。
