Asia Contemporary Art Week Pop-Up

Yu Fan

October 12–November 4, 2017

About This Exhibition

Asia Contemporary Art Week (ACAW) Thinking Projects presents a pop-up exhibition of work by Yu Fan of Beijing at Sundaram Tagore Chelsea. This exhibition is co-presented with the Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation (BCAF)

Known for his sleek and delicate sculptures, the renowned Chinese sculptor presents an intimate set of sculptural clay works culminating from his residency at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in Boston, with particular inspiration drawn from the Asian art collection.

The exhibition is curated by ACAW director Leeza Ahmady as part of Asia Contemporary Art Week’s 2017 signature program Thinking Projects, a pop-up series presenting research-based on-going artistic endeavors by nine noted artists from China, Indonesia, Turkey, India and the United States. The series showcases the vibrancy of artistic activity inside Asia while building deeper bonds between ACAW’s Asia- and New York-based consortium partner organizations and galleries. Yu Fan’s project is BCAF's inaugural Creative China Festival in New York.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Beijing-based artist Yu Fan (b.1966) began to create performance and installation work in the early 1990s, during which he also collaborated with artists Sui Jianguo and Zhan Wang, fellow instructors at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, to stage interventions at sites of demolished school buildings. He has since produced a series of widely recognizable sculptures expressing motifs from myths, daily life, politics and other areas of interest.

Yu’s work has been included in major exhibitions at the Israel National Museum, the Singapore Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and Chicago’s Smart Museum, in addition to the Shanghai Biennale.
