This forty-four page full-color catalogue features recent works from the solo exhibition of Iranian artist Golnaz Fathi at Sundaram Tagore New York (April 2013). Fathi, who works in fine pen, mostly on raw, rectangular, polyptych canvases, in a limited palette of white, black, red and yellow, draws on her long practice of traditional Iranian calligraphy to create her abstract works.
An essay written by independent curator and scholar Layla S. Diba, former director of the Negarestan Museum in Tehran and curator of Islamic art at the Brooklyn Museum, puts Fathi’s work into historical context and explores the role of calligraphy in her work. The catalogue also includes a question-and-answer with the artist, conducted by critic and scholar Michaël Amy, that delves into Fathi’s influences and identity
