Sundaram Tagore Gallery is proud to present an exhibition entitled Anil Revri: Quantum. A noted Indian-born and Washington, D.C.-based artist, Revri is a painter who creates contemplative images that allude to the spiritual. He is the first Indian artist to have a solo exhibition at a major American museum. Works from Cultural Crossings, a suite of Anil Revri paintings from 2000 exploring the similarities existing in Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, will be on view, along with other recent works. Anil Revri: Quantum will open at Sundaram Tagore Gallery in SoHo, New York City on April 14 and closes May 21, 2005.
Known for his geometric abstractions, Revri uses metallic paints, markers and pencils to create an illusion of a three-dimensional grid. The outcome is a dynamic window within a window format, where the palimpsest of layers appears to move in and out of each other. According to the artist, "Though abstract in their rendering, the work is inspired by Eastern philosophy. Each piece becomes a meditation." Furthermore, "There is no reference to narrative here, excepting that of an implied order beneath the restless surface. That surface tension acts as a metaphor for the clutter in our lives that prevents us from achieving that calm that we so desire."
Anil Revri was born in 1956 in New Delhi, India. He has had numerous solo and group shows in India, Europe and the United States. His work is featured in collections worldwide, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress. Revri lives and works in Washington, D.C. Quantum is his second solo exhibition at Sundaram Tagore Gallery.
