37 million people are blind in the World today. A staggering 75% of this blindness is unnecessary and could be easily prevented or cured. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination; loss of sight often leads to social exclusion and marginalization, leaving people who are blind vulnerable to abuse, poverty and neglect.
For over 50 years Sightsavers has worked with partners at a local level in over 30 of the world's poorest countries to prevent and cure blindness, and provide training and educational opportunities for people who are visually impaired.
In this time we have restored the sight of over five million people, and treated over 100 million people for potentially blinding conditions.
