Please join Doug Woodham for a discussion of Basquiat and how he became a global brand. Woodham, the author of Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Making of an Icon (Thames & Hudson, 2025), will talk about the artist’s rise from the downtown New York art scene of the early 1980s to the highest ranks of fine art and popular culture. Talent alone, says Woodham, did not drive that ascent. Dealers, collectors, tastemakers, and, later, those managing his legacy all helped build his reputation and extend his influence far beyond the art world.
Doug Woodham is the former president of Christie’s Americas and a former partner at McKinsey & Company. He is now managing partner of Art Fiduciary Advisors, where he advises collectors and families on financial decisions involving art. An economist, he brings an unusual combination of art-market experience and analytical rigor to the study of cultural icons. He is the author of Art Collecting Today (Allworth Press, 2017).
