Sundaram Tagore Gallery is pleased to present The Art of Anil Revri, an exhibition of new and recent paintings by Indian-born and Washington, D.C.-based artist, Anil Revri. Using the tools of ‘op art’ and the eclectic influences of his country of birth, Revri creates contemplative images, which allude to the spiritual. He attempts an ordering of a universal nature, neither heroic nor merely descriptive. In his complex, dancing matrices of primordial dots known as fractals, Revri is revealing the pathways of the universal and perhaps sublime network of which we are all a part.
Known for his geometric abstractions, Revri uses metallic paints, markers and pencils to create the illusion of a three-dimensional grid. The outcome is a dynamic window within a window format, where the palimpsest of layers appears to move in and out of each other. According to the artist, “Though abstract in their rendering, the work is inspired by Eastern philosophy. Each piece becomes a meditation.” Furthermore, “There is no reference to narrative here, excepting that of an implied order beneath the restless surface. That surface tension acts as a metaphor for the clutter in our lives that prevents us from achieving that calm that we so desire.”
Revri has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in India, Europe, China, and the United States. He was the first Indian
Artist to have a solo exhibition at a major American museum and PRAKRITI: The Art of Anil Revri will be his third solo exhibition at Sundaram Tagore Gallery. An opening cocktail reception will be held at Sundaram Tagore Gallery the evening of September 18th
from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. The exhibition will close October 13th.
Anil Revri was born in 1956 in New Delhi, India. His work is featured in museums and major collections worldwide, including The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, and the Tempra Museum, in Malta.
